Fixing a Blocked Toilet

Most homeowners will have to deal with a blocked toilet at some point. Blocked toilets are frustrating, unsanitary, and plain unpleasant, so it is important to deal with the problem as soon as possible. Luckily, many blocked toilets are easily fixed using a few simple home solutions.

Firstly, you will need to determine the cause of your blocked toilet. If the toilet bowl is empty, try pouring a bucket of water down it. This may put enough pressure on the blockage to force it loose. Be careful, however as too much water can cause the blocked toilet to overflow.

If this fails to fix your blocked toilet, try using a plunger. These can be found at any hardware store, and at most supermarkets. Place the plunger over the drainage hole of the blocked toilet so that it creates a seal. Push down on the handle. This forces air down the pipe, and causes a build up of pressure which should forcibly move any blockages. Any reaming water in bowl of the blocked toilet will also be forced down. Repeatedly push down on the plunger until all the water is gone from the toilet bowl. Try flushing the toilet. If the water still does not drain down the toilet, repeat the process a few times, and try flushing again. For most blocked toilets, this will remove any blockages.

However, if this still does not fix your blocked toilet, you may need to use a more advanced tool called a plumber’s snake. This is a flexible metal rod which can be inserted down the pipes to manually force the blockage to move. Again, these can be purchased at most hardware stores. Push the plumber’s snake down the blocked toilet until you meet resistance. This will most likely be whatever is causing your blocked toilet. Move the snake around the blockage until you feel it shift. Once it has loosened, try flushing the blocked toilet to see if the water is now moving normally.

If neither of the above solutions fix your blocked toilet, you may want to try using a chemical drain cleaner. This will pour down the blocked toilet and dissolve the blockage. You can buy drain cleaners in a range of strengths from your local hardware store. Be careful when using chemical cleaner on a blocked toilet, however, as they can be harmful if they get on your skin or in your eyes.

If you still cannot unclog your blocked toilet, it is time to call a professional plumber such as Regency Plumbing to help you fix the problem. Professional plumbers will have equipment to deal with blocked toilets which are unavailable to the average homeowner, such as high pressure water jets, CCTV surveying, and electro-mechanical tools.
