If you have a blocked drain, it is a good idea to have a go at drain cleaning yourself before calling a professional plumber. If using a plunger fails to clean your drain, you may want to consider drain cleaning with a chemical drain cleaner.  Drain cleaners are effective, easy to use, readily available, and are suited for most drain cleaning needs. They are more effective at drain cleaning than simply suing hot water or other home remedies. There are many options to choose from, so you can select the drain cleaner which is best suited to your needs. You can find drain cleaners and drain cleaning supplies at hard ware stores, home improvement stores, and some supermarkets.

Drain cleaners work by dissolving the particles of food, hair, grease, or dirt which are blocking your drain. They are either alkaline or acid based. There are also several new drain cleaners are becoming available which use enzymes to eat through the organic matter in your drain. These “natural” drain cleaners do not contain the industrial strength chemicals of other drain cleaners, and so may be safer to use in the home. However, these enzyme-based drain cleaners do not work well on drains which are blocked by hair, so are generally unsuitable for blocked showers, baths, and bathroom sinks.

It is widely accepted that the thicker the drain cleaning solution, the better, as a thick drain cleaner will be better able to adhere to the sides of the pipe. This means it will clean your drainage pipes faster, and will also help prevent future blockages by remaining in the pipes for longer.

It is important to remember that drain cleaners contain chemicals, and that these may be harmful to your health if you are not careful. You need to follow basic safety guidelines to protect yourself when using drain cleaners. Always read the directions, and wear gloves and safety goggles when using the drain cleaner. This will protect you from splashes and chemical burns while you are drain cleaning. Make sure the area in which you are drain cleaning is well-ventilated. Never mix different drain cleaners together, as this can result in dangerous chemical reactions and poisonous fumes being created.

If you have a septic tank, ensure the drain cleaner you are using is safe for septic systems. Also make sure it is safe for the type of pipe you have, as some metals may react differently to the chemicals in the drain cleaner. Flush out the pipes with hot water when you are finished drain cleaning.

If you stick to these simple safety guidelines, you will find that drain cleaning using a chemical drain cleaner is easy and effective, and suitable for most basic drain blockages.
