If you have a blocked drain in your home, whether in the bathroom, kitchen, or laundry, but you don’t want to use potentially toxic chemical drain cleaners, there are other options that you can try. As well as organic drain unblockers there are also several homemade drain unblockers which people often find very effective.  They can provide a safer, greener alternative to common chemical drain unblockers. However, you do need to be careful not to mix home chemicals together (for example, mixing bleach with commercial toilet cleaners) mixing, as they can produce toxic fumes that can be harmful to your health.

Before you try any of the homemade drain unblockers, it’s always a good idea to try and unblock the drain with a plunger. These prove effective a lot of the time for unblocking drains, although you may need to make a few attempts to dislodge the clog in your drain. Remember: never use a plunger after a commercial drain unblocker has been used, or is still present in any standing water.

One drain unblocker which is good for small clogs caused by grease or food particles building up in your drain is dishwashing liquid. Mix with boiling water and pour down the drain. It should dissolve any grease and grime that is coasting your drain and blocking or slowing down water flow.  Doing this every few weeks is also a very good preventative method to stop future drain clogs.

Baking soda mixed with vinegar is also known as an effective drain unblocker. Mix ½ cup of white vinegar with equal amounts baking soda, and then pour down whichever drain is clogged. If you can, cover the drain opening with a plug or stopper. After a few minutes, flush the drain with hot water to wash the drain out. This combination is a good drain unblocker as the baking soda and vinegar act to break down the soap, grease, and oil particles that often form clogs.

Another drain unblocker recipe that uses baking soda is mixing baking soda with salt and hot water, and then pouring down the drain. If you leave the mixture to sit in the drain overnight, the clog should have been dissolved by morning.

You can also try mixing baking soda, vinegar, and washing powder to create another effective drain unblocker. Slowly pour ½ cup of baking soda mixed with ½ of vinegar down the clogged drain, then follow with a cup of white vinegar. The washing powder contains enzymes which can break down any organic matter clogging your drain, and when combined with the abrasion of the vinegar and baking soda is a very efficient drain unblocker. Leave for several minutes, and then flush out the drain with hot water.

These homemade drain unblockers are a great alternative to chemical drain unblockers, which cause environmental degradation, and can release toxic fumes into your home.
