How a Sink Drain is Installed

To install a sink drain in your home, you will need to assemble a few basic tools and supplies. You will need: a pipe wrench, a bathroom sink drain kit, a drain pipe (including an S trap), plumber’s putty, channel locks, and large adjustable wrenches.

Sinks are most commonly placed in the kitchen or the bathroom. In the kitchen, you will need a 1-1/2" drain pipe, whereas in the bathroom you will probably use a 1-1/4" drain pipe. Depending on how modern your drain is, the drain pipes will need to be made of either PCV, brass, or chrome.

After you’ve determined the size of drain pipe you need, you will also need to establish what type of drain pipe you need for your sink drain. Sink drains either drain vertically or horizontally, although if your home was built within the last ten years, it will probably have a horizontal drain.  A horizontal drain will require a P trap, and a vertical drain will need an S trap. Depending on how far the sink is from the wall, you may also need to buy additional lengths of straight drain piping. If you have two sinks in the kitchen or bathroom, you will need a T-junction, which will allow the sinks to empty water into the same drain.

The actual installation of the sink drain is relatively straightforward. All you need to do is connect the lengths of drain pipe together, and then use washers and bolts to connect the drain pipes to the sink and the wall drain. Pipe thread compound can be used when putting drain pipes made of PVC together. This will turn into a seal around the drain pipe, and prevent the pipe eroding from water friction.

When purchasing your drainage supplies, make sure you are buying good quality drain pipes and equipment. The drains need to be able to withstand water pressure without bursting, and be sturdy enough to withstand any bumps and knocks. Also make sure the drain pipes are connected and sealed properly, as you don’t want any leakages from under the sink. Safety is important as well when you are installing any drainage systems. Wear water proof gloves to help avoid contamination from waste water in the drains.

Once you have installed your new sink drain, you need to look after it properly so that it keeps working correctly. There are a few basic steps you can take to maintain your sink drain and prevent problems such as clogs. Check the water flow and drainage of your sink drain every six months or so. If the water flow is sluggish, the sink drain may need cleaning out.
