A blocked shower drain is both frustrating and problematic. If left unchecked, a blocked shower drain can cause expensive damage to your bathroom and plumbing system. It’s therefore a good idea to deal with a clogged shower drain as soon as you notice the problem.
When working correctly, a shower drain should remove water from your shower very quickly. If the water flow down the drain seems to be slow, or there is a build up of water in the shower, your shower drain may be blocked. Dealing with the clog in your shower drain early can stop a more serious blockage forming later. Often the problem will be easy to fix, and you will be able to unblock your shower drain yourself. However, if the problem is more serious, you may need to call a professional plumber to do the job.
Hair is the most common cause of a blocked shower drain. The easiest way to solve this problem is to simply remove the clog of hair which is blocking your shower drain. Hair cannot be dissolved by drain cleaners, as many other blockages can, so you will have to remove it from your shower drain by hand. Firstly, check the strainer at the mouth of the shower drain. If the holes on this strainer are clogged, the blockage can cause the drainage problems in your shower. If cleaning the strainer thoroughly fails to solve the problem, remove the strainer completely.
You will then need to inspect the shower drain with a flashlight, looking down the hole uncovered when you removed the strainer. If you can see the blockage in the shower drain, try and remove it with a wire or a plumber’s snake. This is inserted into the drain, and then manoeuvred around until the clog is loosened. Make sure you do not accidentally push the blockage further down into the shower drain!
If the cause of the blocked shower drain is not visible, you will need to use a plunger. Put the mouth of the plunger over the shower drain, and move the handle up and down until the water drains cleanly. The pressure created by the plunger should dislodge the blockage in the shower drain. You may need to repeat the process a few times.
If you don’t think that the blockage is caused by a build up of hair in the shower drain, you can also try using a chemical drain cleaner, which will dissolve the clog. Make sure you read the instructions carefully, and wear protective equipment such as goggles and gloves when working with chemicals.
If your shower drain is still blocked, the problem is clearly more serious, and you will need to call a professional plumbing company such as Regency Plumbing. Professional plumbers will have drain unblocking tools which are unavailable to the average homeowner. For example, they can use high pressure water jets to blast away any blockages in a shower drain. Other drain unblocking tools include electric ‘eels’, which can cut or drill out blockages, CCTV surveying, and electro-mechanical cleaning.
